Helen Tang is an Of Counsel in the Insurance & Reinsurance Practice Area Group. Helen specialises in maritime law and international trade focusing on disputes arising out of bills of lading, charterparties, letters of credit, international trading contracts and ship management contracts. She regularly advises insurers, P&I Clubs, recovery agents, international freight forwarders, trading companies and ship managers on these matters.Helen has extensive experience in obtaining security for clients in particular in respect of vessel arrests in both Hong Kong and other jurisdictions. Helen also handles general commercial disputes from drafting contracts to obtaining injunctions.

Helen was qualified in Hong Kong in 2011. In addition to representing clients in Hong Kong, she works regularly with local counsel representing clients in jurisdictions such as mainland China, Singapore, Australia, UK, South Africa and India. Helen is fluent in Cantonese, English and Mandarin.

Relevant experience

  • Collision between “ELENI” and “HEUNG-A DRAGON” – representing various cargo interests with claims totaling over US$17.7 million in a limitation fund in Hong Kong.
  • Sinking of “NASCO DIAMOND” – assisted in negotiating on all claims arising out of the sinking with claims totaling US$70 million
  • An international trading house against buyers in arbitrations spanning across Hong Kong, Australia and the UK in relation to issues arising out of letters of credit and sales of goods disputes involving supply of iron ore.
  • A liquidation of a trading company involving debts over US$300 million.
